PS3 FAT

Disassemble his PS3 FAT

This tutorial will show you how to disassemble your PS3 FAT. This may be for the installation of a flash, a repair or even interviews. However here I am going to show you the disassembly of the console, then it is you who choose what to do once it disassembled.

Required:
  • Your PS3 FAT
  • T8 torx screwdriver
  • A flat screw saw of size 1
  • Screw driver cross (cruciform) size 2 and 3
Note: This tutorial was made with a model FAT3 PS3 CECHP04 with a motherboard VER-001.

Warning: I want to clarify that this tutorial shows you how to disassemble your PS3 FAT but not how to put it back up, to do this you just have to do the steps in reverse. In any case I will not be responsible if your console goes wrong or does not start after reassembly.

Materials Needed

Before you start disassembling the PS3, let's take a small picture of the hardware you'll need to easily unmount it

Dismantling the Shell

For starters, you will have to remove the top cover or there is the Playstation 3 inscription. To do so, when you are facing your console, look on the left side. You have the small hard drive cover (you can already remove it) and a small rubber cover just above.

You will then have a torx screw (T8). Remove it and then take advantage of removing the screw holding the hard drive in place (cruciform).

You can then already remove the hard drive from its location by pulling it against the outside.

Then you can remove the cash from the console, you just have to slide it to the left (when the console is in front of you) to remove it.

Now you have access to the screws to remove the upper shell of the console, there are 7 screws that hold it. Refer to the image below to be sure you found them all.
In terms of size, you only have one screw shorter than the others. To remind you of its location, you have an engraved S right next to the hole where it is. I do not know if it is wanted on the part of Sony to put S as "small" ("small" in English) but that's how I proceed to be sure not to be wrong.

Once you've removed all of them, look at the rear right of the console, you have a small hole with a clip, it holds the shell to the rest of the console. To remove it without breaking anything, press the clip against the inside of the console, then pull the back of the cover upwards. It should come without too much resistance.

Now that the cache is removed, we have a closer look at the console. On the left we have the power box and then on the right the Blue-ray player.

Remove major components

First we will start by removing the power box. To do this, you have a small screw at the front to remove, then two other small in the back and two others on the left side outside which are a little bigger than the others.
Do not forget also to remove the two plugs of the case, first the one at the front.
Then the socket located at the back directly on the power box.

Once removed from the box, you can disconnect it from the rest of the console.
Note: This case is itself connected to the motherboard live with two pins (from below) so it's normal that you have to force a little can to remove it, you'll just have to shoot it with + / - by force to disconnect it from the mother-carter.
Once you have removed the case, you will have to remove the Blue-ray player this time. To do it is very easy, the reader is held by the screws that hold the cache, so the one you have already removed before, so there are more screws that hold more, you just have to remove the tablecloth as well as the power jack of the player.

For the tablecloth, be careful to raise the black clip slightly against the top with delicacy or you will break it. If you do not bite your nails you should be able to lift the clip with a fingernail. You can then pull the black tab on the tablecloth to remove it from the socket.

Once the player removed, you have almost arrived at the motherboard.

Start by removing the mass (screw with the washer) as well as the catch of the ventilator
Warning: I make you aware that the catch of the fan is very fragile, do not remove it by pulling directly on the 3 son under penalty of removing them from the socket. You must remove the plug by pulling directly on it, while being careful not to unsolder the socket on the motherboard because it is also fragile and does not withstand too much strength.

Then you have a series of screws to remove in order to remove the metal plate that protects the top of the motherboard. Also remember to remove the 4 screws that hold the two plates in the center of the motherboard.

Once you have removed all of them, you will be able to remove the motherboard. To do this, lift the front up and then pull it against you to dislodge it from its location.
  • Note: Also if it is the first time you dismount your console you will probably force a little. The CPU (processor) and the RSX (chipset graphics) may be stuck with the cooling plates for heat dissipation because of the thermal paste. Be careful not to force the same place on the motherboard, put a little force on all sides of the motherboard.

That's it, your console is now disassembled and you have full access to the motherboard.

Complements for dusting

Small complement if you want to completely dust your console to the fan.
Start by removing the metal bracket or the motherboard just land on it, as the motherboard up front and then remove it from the rest of the console.

Then remove the 4 screws holding the fan in place.

Then remove the air grill on the back of the console. You can just stand up there, no screws hold it in place.

You can now remove the fan and have access to the heat sink that transmits heat from the CPU and RSX to allow cooling of the console.

The tutorial is now finished, to go up the console, just follow this tutorial but in reverse. If you have organized well for disassembly (do not mix all the screws and all the parts) you should not have too much trouble to reassemble it.
